Top 5 must-see travel destinations to visit this summer

By  |

There is no greater feeling than travelling to a new place in the summer where you can just explore! Me and my dad love cities where you can walk around the old towns and learn more about the history. My mum, sisters and nana however love putting their feet up and relaxing in the sunshine. My Irish genes and the fact I have to wear factor 50 sun cream makes me enjoy this slightly less…  but I do love a beautiful beach. So here are a variety of travel destinations that you can visit in the summer, to suit the history lovers and the sunbathers.

  1. Cannes, France

Located on the French Riviera, Cannes is a stunning resort town lined with upmarket boutiques, a picturesque beach and copious patisseries. I loved walking along the cobbled streets admiring all the expensive jewellery and hearing the hustle and bustle of the people in the restaurants. Cannes is also home to the famous film festival where you can see the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès and the Allée des Étoiles- Cannes’ walk of fame.

  1. The Amalfi Coast, Italy

One of the best days of my life so far was when I jumped into a private car and we drove along the Amalfi coast, located in the Province of Salerno of southern Italy. I distinctly remember the beauty of looking out at the glistening deep blue sea that shone like crystals, the sun brightly beaming down on us. To my left I saw plentiful green trees and tiny dotted white buildings. Taking in my surroundings I felt like the luckiest person in the world! During our day trip to the Amalfi coast we also spent the afternoon in Sorrento which is a charming town with winding cobbled paths and a variety of shops, each selling their famous limoncello, a delicious lemon liqueur.

  1. Kotor, Greece

Kotor in Greece, with a population of only 13,510 is a hidden gem. A coastal town in Montenegro, the overhanging cliffs make the landscape extremely impressive and it’s an ideal place to soak in the culture and natural beauty. Kotor is unlike the hustle and bustle of other popular Greek destinations like Zante and Kavos. Walks through the old town immerse you in Greek culture and the architecture is phenomenal. Kotor’s Cats museum is a favourite of visitors offering cat-themed exhibits and artwork, just purrfect.

  1. Rome, Italy

A must see for history lovers or those who are a fan of spectacular architecture. Having had a guided tour, I would urge you to do the same. The Colosseum was a highlight; estimated to have been able to hold 80,000 spectators and completed in AD 80. Another popular tourist sight is the Trevi fountain. Known for tourists throwing in coins to hopefully gain prosperity!

  1. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a remarkable city full of life, culture and music. It is home to some spectacular historical buildings such as the Sagrada Familia church, which is the work of architect Antoni Gaudi. The church has been under construction since 1882 and completion is planned for the year 2026. I visited Barcelona when I was younger and I vividly remember walking down La Rambla. It’s a  popular promenade and shopping street where you can find exciting street performers,  fresh fruit stalls and La Boqueria ; Barcelona’s flagship market.

Summer will be soon upon us and I’m hoping you feel inspired to visit some of the places or add them to your list of must see desintations.

Happy travelling!
