Review: Inside Out

By  |

Inside Out is Pixar’s 15th film and most certainly lives up to the triumph of its predecessors. This film is the ultimate emotional rollercoaster – you will laugh and cry as you embark upon a journey with a young girl named Riley taking on huge changes in her life. Inside Out is so relatable and clever it is impossible not to be drawn in and question what is really happening inside your head.

Though the film is based around Riley, the focal point is on her emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust. Amy Poehler brings life to the lead character/emotion Joy with her infectious excitable voice complementing her appearance structured by thousands of golden energy particles. Sadness (Phyllis Smith), though an inevitable downer, is hilariously accurate and embodies the dramatic meltdowns we have all faced at some point in our own lives.

It is clear to see the similarities between director Pete Docter’s previous works Up and Monster’s Inc. Inside Out plays on your heart strings in a similar fashion to Carl and Ellie’s story in the opening scene of Up, and the innovative creativity of Monstropolis has strong parallels with the colourful fantasy world in Riley’s imagination.

As Inside Out is a coming of age film, it is easy to understand how adults and children love it alike. It highlights the importance of key moments in life and how important memories are in forming relationships with those around us as well as shaping ourselves. What makes Inside Out so powerful is the way it makes you cherish your sweetest childhood memories but also appreciate growth and who we are today. A hugely recommended watch.

I love this movie more than anything. It is my favorite thing in the world. I believe that this movie is the greatest movie of all time. It is greater than The Godfather and Citizen Kane. It has great characters and a great story. It is just a perfect movie.
