Milan Fashion Week: Dolce & Gabbana SS18

By  |

The queen of hearts was the inspiration for the Dolce & Gabbana SS18 showcase and capture our hearts it certainly did.

The show opened as spotlights cast across an army of models all sporting variations of the classic black corseted dresses which have long been associated with the brand. Structured panelling and mesh inserts were aplenty as creative directors Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce kicked off the show with a nod to the brands design roots. In typical Dolce & Gabbana style the only colour to be seen was in the accessories as models were adorned with their signature crowns and red roses were entwined through the hair.

A sudden injection of colour began with a transformation from sleek, structured silhouettes toward billowing skirts and flowing sleeves. The creativity of the designs brought almost fairytale esque imaginations to life, whilst reminding the audience of the brands heritage. Andy Warhol imagery was brought to mind as contrasting prints came forth and shoes were finalised with soup can heels. Dresses were adorned with domestic references featuring oversized prints of anything from bell peppers to biscuits. This eclecticism was accentuated as each look was paired with equally as impressive earrings in the shape of Clementine’s amongst other fruity designs.  Despite these vivid creations the decadence of the brand was not lost as elaborate crowns and jewels remained present across all 106 looks.

The show then completed a full circle as the finale mirrored its opening. A sultry army of models took to the catwalk dressed once again in classic black Dolce & Gabbana styles which illustrated Stefano Gabbana’s statement, “The embellishment and everything is a fashion. Black is a style.”

This seasons show stood as a stark reminder that minimalism remains dead. So keep updating those wardrobes girls because next season it looks like the sentiment still stands, that bolder is most certainly better.
