Back to uni: five key pieces to update your wardrobe

By  |

Whether you’re an avid summer lover scowling at the grey day outside and dreaming of your sunny holiday, or an autumn activist pulling on your new shoes ready for some leaf crunching, the new season is here. This means long dark nights, rainy days, Halloween and Bonfire Night are all around the corner.

Here are 5 key pieces to update your wardrobe so you can sip your hot chocolate in style when the cold comes.

The boots

With a new season comes new shoes. This season is all about the boot, whether it’s thigh high, calf high or an ankle boot. Elle are singing the praises of “go-anywhere” boots that will make your daily trek to University a fashionable breeze.

The beauty of boots is that there are so many different styles and colours; this suede number from River Island is very versatile, as grey matches with any autumnal colour palette.

If you’re more of a thigh-high kind of girl, go for a classic black pair along with a mini hem, a nod to the Rock mini-trend that’s hitting autumn. Match with a button down skirt and polo neck jumper and you’re ready to go.

The dungarees

The 70s reigned champion during summer styling and it seems its survived the season transition. Suede is in big time along with peasant blouses, bell sleeves and, of course, flares.

In order to update your wardrobe, opt for some durable cord fabric. This looks effortlessly retro and dungarees are perfect for autumnal layering, which suits the arctic temperatures that are sure to hit later in the year. These dungarees are great in a classic trouser length, ticking the box of jumpsuits as seen on fashion gurus like Alexa Chung.

The polo neck jumper

Make sure at least one of the jumpers your buy for your AW15 wardrobe is a polo neck. This trend has caught on everywhere and there are endless options on the high-street, ranging from striped to block colour, sweatshirt material to chunky knit.

Here is a key wardrobe item that you can throw on for those early morning lectures, confident in this little jumper’s ability to transform any hum-drum outfit.

The coat/cape

Heading into AW15 you should be considering which coat (coats?) you’ll need to update your look.

Thankfully this year coat edits are telling us we have a lot of freedom, with quite a few styles on-trend. One thing that’s certain is the dominant presence of the cape; this shape is really chic right now and you can chose between short or longer fits dependant on your height. Pair your cape with tight bottoms to balance out the wide silhouette, and your favourite pair of flats.

Colour wise, neutral schemes are here to compliment the new season, so opt for a camel or light grey. There’s no need to feel like Little Red Riding Hood – capes are seriously cosy and omits the annoyance of coat arms.

The denim midi

The end of summer saw the button down A-line skirt burst onto the scene. Now, to transport your look forward, midi is the new fit and denim is the material. Denim is always a reliable staple to plan the rest of your outfit around, and the length will keep you that little bit warmer in cooler weather.
